This chapter focuses on the history and theory of film editing. Early filmmakers moved from real to reel time when they devised cutting to continuity. D. W. Griffith edited for dramatic intensity and emotional emphasis, and Soviet filmmakers expanded his classical cutting techniques and developed theories of montage. French theorist Bazin, however, argued for minimal editing and favored deep focus composition. Italian neorealists filmmakers took this approach in their post-World War II films. Hitchcock’s practice of storyboarding provides a concise example of editing at work.

4) Does the cutting seem manipulative or are we left to interpret the images on our own?
5) What kind of rhythm does the editing establish with each scene?
6) Is the personality of the filmmaker apparent in the cutting or is the presentation of shots relatively objective and functional?
