Structure of the Oral Presentation-

General tips:
  1. Don’t do a shot by shot breakdown of the extract, but group comments into sections below and avoid repetition.
  2. Make sure to explain how meaning is created if the film through film language.
  3. Consolidate your evaluative interpretation into a focused oral paragraph for each section.
  4. Practice using a recorder or microphone before day of oral.
  5. Work on the timing of your delivery
  6. Use your notes to cover the “hit list” of topics to discuss.
  7. A student may not read their presentation without penalty on their final exam.

3. Explain how the extract relates to the rest of the film narrative and to the structure of the film as a whole.

3 Minutes

5. Detailed analysis and support of your statement above by looking at mise en scene, framing, composition, dominant image, negative space, shot choices, point-of-view choices, shot length and movement, levels of intimacy, acting choices, style choices, editing choices, visual symbolism and motif, narrative emphasis…
6. and whatever else is significant.

3 Minutes
7. Explanation of the extract’s significance in terms of genre, target audience, film history, socio-cultural significance, institutional factors
8. and whatever else is significant.

2 minutes
9. Final Summary and conclusion. Repeat and reinforce points while you support the choice of your 5 minutes.
