Chapter 8 explains the interdisciplinary field of narratology, focusing on the rhetoric of storytelling, the problem of authorship in film, and the role of the spectator. The classical paradigm, suggested by Aristotle and diagramed by Freytag, is exemplified by Buster Keaton’s The General. Realistic, formalistic, and nonfictional narratives each use different narrative structures. Film genres are like myths because they provide a convenient way to organize story materials through stylized conventions and archetypal story patterns.
