1. The neo-relalist movement is basically the ides that films should mirror realism. in this movie, an example of that is that the director made the ending ambiguous. He chose not to end the film by revealing what happens to the character and instead left the veiwer to decide what happens to the bopy and his family. This shows realistic idea because we do not know what happens in the future.
2. It is important because it sets up the plot of him trying to find the bycicle because he needs it in order to survive. In the setting we can see that he needs a job and that he lives in porverty and the bycicle is the only thing that will keep him out of the poverty.
3. I think it is trying to show the life of these people in italy after what they have been through. and the things they deal with in order to survive. The main character is driven to steal a bycicle even though that has happened to him. He needs to bycicle and it has forced him to do something against his morals.

In the bicycle theif, the director wanted the film to seem authenic and extremely realistic in the protrayal of the main characters. Because the director wanted the film to be as real and authenic as possilbe be hired many non-professional actors to fill in the background of the scenes, for example the scene where the main character looks for the bicycle in the market. Many of the extras were actual venders and sellers and helped contribute to the films realism. The last thing to point out is the ending of the film. Unlike tradition films, The Bicycle Theif ended in an uncertain and uneasy feeling. The film ended with the main character with his son walking in failure into the crowds.

Ghassan Shamieh's Response
1. The Neo- Realism Movement, was an attempt by the Italian producers to inform and educate the public on the poverty going on in post war Italy. According to this website, the directors used non- professional actors within their movies. This they believed, would create a better sense of realism, becuase you have actual people experiencing the crisis as the characters. This will cause them to put more heart and effort into their roles. They did use natural lighting and the narratives were loose.

2. The setting is a major influence in how the audience perceives the movie. If their is a poor man within a wealthy society, that would seem odd. But because everyone was so poor, everyone was looking for jobs, it adds to the effect of the movie. Not only the effect, but the overall interpretation by the audience of the current conditions going on in that area. Becuase the audience is able to realize that everyone is poor, no one has a job, they are more able to understand the harshness and obstacles society at that time put them thorugh.

3. It is definately a parable about the situations in post-war Italy. The message was to show how devastating the effects of war can be. It can hurt teh economy, it can hurt peoples ability to provide for their fmailies, it has bloodhsed and murders. Awareness is what these directors of neo- realism wanted to create.

4. This movie was so important for that time becuase it revered as one of the foundation stones of Italian neorealism. This film was the first film to cross the boundaries into neo- realism completely. It was a very simple movie, yet it related to most of socitey at the time. Which is why it was so unique. It related to the people on an issue that hit home, but yet it was a simple and understandable movie.
